Mapping the North's Digital Assets: Commission Opportunity
A commission opportunity by
Pixel Palace is the digital media arts programme at Tyneside Cinema working with new media artists, technologists, curators and audiences to reflect upon cinema’s past, expanded present and its all-pervasive future. Tyneside Cinema has been awarded a grant by Arts Council England (North East, North West and Yorkshire regional offices) to conduct a new project called Mapping the North’s Digital Assets. Pixel Palace is commissioning an artist to produce work as part of this project.
MAPPING THE NORTH’S DIGITAL ASSETS Project Overview
In 2010, Arts Council England published ‘Achieving Great Art for Everyone’, which argued for excellence, founded on diversity and innovation and a new collaborative spirit to develop the arts over the long term, so they truly belong to everyone. Within this report it highlighted ‘the dizzying potential of digital technology in transforming the way we make, distribute, receive and exchange art’.
This project will explore the digital developments and technologies which are impacting on the way art is produced and experienced. Focussing on the arts infrastructure across the northern region of England, this project aims to unlock the vast and largely untapped potential to create, share and link artistic and cultural works in ways made uniquely possible through digital media to ultimately increase engagement between artists, cultural organisations and audiences.
Mapping the North’s Digital Assets will take place from January until March 2013, with a programme of investigation, mapping, dialogue, partnership engagement and artistic output. A Creative Consultant will oversee the delivery of this programme by mapping the existing and potential creative media assets with the aim to engage number of key organisations and networks in the north of England, including members of Cinema Arts Network (CAN). As an integral part of this process, Pixel Palace is offering a commission opportunity for an artist, currently based in the North, to creatively respond to the exchange and findings of this project. This commission will form a part of the valuable resource and legacy of Mapping the North’s Digital Assets.
MAPPING THE NORTH’S DIGITAL ASSETS Artist Commission Brief
We are looking for an artist who can generate a conceptual artwork that detours from the obvious ‘data visualisation’ model, placing significance upon the creation of work that compliments the investigative aims of this mapping exercise. We require an artist who can contribute to this project in a playful and engaging way, exploring the creative potential of this new knowledge for artists, digital makers, cultural organisations and audiences. The commissioned art work should involve a degree of poetic interpretation of the complex information generated by the mapping exercise. The artist should also consider the networks that will be consulted as a means of distribution, which could involve an exchange of data and/ or manifest as a material artefact. The selected artist will be managed by Pixel Palace and work in close contact with the Creative Consultant throughout the mapping process.
