Step Sequence

As part of the Pixel Palace programme, Tyneside Cinema has selected a series of nine new sound pieces offering alternative sonic experiences for visitors to the central stairwell.
Exhibition times:
02 – 27 March 2009
12:00 – 21:00
Artist: Alison Ballard
Title: The Eighth Wonder of the World
The late 1930’s architecture of the Tyneside Cinema encapsulates the social and economic culture of the era in which it was built. So too does the movie, ‘King Kong: The Eighth Wonder of the World’. In a recreation of King Kong climbing the Empire State Building, a panic-stricken crowd watch from the foot of the stairwell as Kong battles with attacking biplanes at the top.

Title: Rocks Pools Filling on Knoll Beach (Jan. 2009)
Martin Franklin is a digital artist & musician, curator and internet broadcaster, formerly leader of 90's ambient trio TUU. "Rock Pools" is a binaural recording of sounds made by the incoming tide on Studland Bay, Dorset. The recording method used here creates a hyperreal experience of the natural soundscape, its detail amplified beyond normal perception.

Artist: Mark Vernon
Title: Yo-Yo
Electronically generated tones ascend and descend in cascading streams reminiscent of fireworks or falling bombs. This piece was created with the unique ‘top-to-bottom’ stereo installation in mind.

Artist: Neil Reynolds
Title: Waterfall
''Water Fall” is a composite of field recordings mixed specifically to use the unique stereo set up in the Tyneside Cinema stairwell. Recordings made at the top and bottom of Hareshaw Lynn near Bellingham are placed in the stereo image so that the water appears to cascade down the centre of the stairs.
Artist: Richard Bowers
Title of work: Dialogue
In "Dialogue", I have worked with recordings of speech to form a brutal palette of sounds alongside the 'civilised' sound of sung phonemes. This is an extension of my Dante project. Here the voices of Paradise compete with those of Hell.
